MARINE RESERVES IN NEW ZEALAND
The main aim of a marine reserve is to create an area free from the removal of marine habitats and life, providing a useful comparison for scientists to study. Marine reserves may be established in areas that contain underwater scenery, natural features, or marine life of such distinctive quality, or so typical, beautiful or unique that their continued preservation is in the national interest.
TE TAPUWAE O RONGOKAKO OPERATIONAL PLAN
The Department of Conservation and the Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve Committee created an operational plan of the reserve, published in 2008. This document outlines the vision of the reserve, relationships, legislative context, scientific research, visitor management, and implementation, monitoring and review. A 25 year generational review will provide opportunity for the community to test the continuing relevance and appropriateness of the marine reserve mechanism, therefore, offering a voice to the future generation.
TE TAPUWAE O RONGOKAKO MARINE RESERVE
This unique marine reserve is home to eight different marine habitats including inshore reef, rocky inter tidal platforms and sediment flats. It is utilised for a variety of different activities, ranging from recreational swimming, diving and snorkeling to education and research activities. Check out DOC's brochure on Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve for more information and facts.
